Dr Lamonte, Chief Executive of Transport for Greater Manchester, who has previously held a range of senior roles in the Royal Air Force and Ministry of Defence, will be the first president of Deptherapy and Deptherapy Education.
Deptherapy uses specially adapted scuba diving programmes to rehabilitate wounded service people, helping them recover from physical injuries as well as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
It is seeking formal charity status to progress its work.
Dr Lamonte said: “I have served in a number of military roles, including in the Falklands, Iraq and the former Yugoslavia, so know the work of organisations like Deptherapy is vitally important and tremendously valued.
“I am proud to be their first president and look forward to supporting their development as a fully-fledged charity.”
Dr Richard Cullen, Chairman of Deptherapy and Deptherapy Education, said: “The Board are indebted to Jon for accepting our invitation to become our First President. Deptherapy is moving forward and we believe Jon is the ideal person to be our figurehead and to bring his experiences from the RAF and business to our undertakings.”
