BIUPC 2018 Results Announced
On 1st September nearly 60 British and Irish divers took to the waters in and around the UK and Ireland to vie for the title British & Irish Underwater Photography Champion 2018. Veteran UK photographer Trevor Rees took top honours and is the first person to win the coveted Peter Scoones trophy twice. Trevor won both the wide-angle and close-up categories. Best newcomer was William Coghill with a super image of an edible crab.

Photographers submitted their photos from around the UK and Ireland in a tight 24 hour window that tested the planning and photography skills of competitors. Images submitted this year ranged from macro shots of tiny critters on local reefs to blue sharks cruising in the open ocean. Judges Susannah Snowden-Smith from the Cayman Islands and Damien McGuirk from Ireland were hugely impressed by the variety and quality of entries, which showcased the extraordinary range of photographic opportunities around the UK and Ireland.

BIUPC organiser Paul Colley said: “The competition goes from strength to strength. We enjoy generous sponsorship from the UK dive industry and the competition is routinely attracting three times the number of competitors compared with the older traditional style splash-in. The trick has been achieving greater inclusivity for the whole UK and Irish diving community by exploiting modern communications.”

Winner Trevor Rees was typically modest about his achievement, which was announced in a live internet broadcast during BSoUP’s September meeting. He said: “I love the format of this competition and so enjoy taking part.”

Over the next 12 months, specialist scuba holiday company Dive Worldwide will be supporting Bite-Back Shark & Marine Conservation with donations collected from client bookings to any one of its stunning dive destinations around the world. The independently-owned operator expects to raise £3000 for the UK charity.
Manager at Dive Worldwide, Phil North, said: “We’re especially excited to work with Bite-Back and support its intelligent, creative and results-driven campaigns to end the UK trade in shark products and prompt a change in attitudes to the ocean’s most maligned inhabitant.”
Bite-Back is running campaigns to hold the media to account on the way it reports shark news along with a brand new nationwide education programme. Last year the charity was credited for spearheading a UK ban on the import and export of shark fins.
Campaign director at Bite-Back, Graham Buckingham, said: “We’re enormously grateful to Dive Worldwide for choosing to support Bite-Back. To launch the fundraising initiative, Phil North presented Graham Buckingham with a cheque for £1,000.
