Why We Love Palau

The Republic of Palau is an up and coming destination for divers, tourists and adventurers. With turquoise waters and incredible dive sites, Palau is an island country located in the western Pacific Ocean. This tropical destination has caught our attention as a marine conservation superstar – here’s why!
1. For many years, the Republic of Palau has been dedicated to the conservation of seven different species of sea turtles, nearly all of which are endangered.
2. In 2009 Palau created the world’s first shark sanctuary.
3. Known as the “Champion for the Environment,” President Thomas Remengesau Jr. created Palau’s first no-take area in 2015, which covers approximately 193,000 square miles and encompasses 80% of Palau’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ). Following a transition period of five years, the marine sanctuary is expected to be in place by 2020.
4. In 2016, they were the second country in the world to ratify the Paris Climate Agreement.
5. Also in 2016, Palau produced a five-year plan for the EEZ no-take area, which called for “robust monitoring and control measures,” which protects marine life from harmful oil spills and illegal fishing.
The Republic of Palau recognizes the importance of marine biodiversity and marine protected areas. Marine Conservation Institute applauds Palau for the immense efforts towards protecting the ocean’s most important places.

Donate to Basking in Nature: Sighting Giants
The Shark Trust is hoping to raise £10k which will be doubled to £20k. This will go towards Basking in Nature: Sighting Giants. And they need YOUR help to reach they’re goal.
The Shark Trust’s citizen science project is to monitor and assess basking sharks through sightings; encouraging data collection, community engagement, and promoting nature accessibility. This initiative aims to enhance health and wellbeing by fostering a deeper connection with British Sharks.
Campaign Aims
- Increase citizen science reporting of Basking Sharks and other shark sightings to help inform shark and ray conservation.
- Provide educational talks about the diverse range of sharks and rays in British waters and accessible identification guides!
- Create engaging and fun information panels on how to ID the amazing sharks and rays we have on our doorstep! These can be used on coastal paths around the Southwest. With activities and information on how you can make a difference for sharks and rays!
- Promote mental wellbeing through increasing time in nature and discovering the wonders beneath the waves!
