Stomach of Beached Whale Found in Washington State full of Rubbish

A grey whale that had stranded on Arroyo Beach in Washington state’s Puget Sound and later died a mile south of Fauntleroy was discovered to have a stomach full of trash, including sweat pants, surgical gloves, a golf ball, small towels and dozens of plastic bags and bits of plastic.

The cause of the whale’s death is still being investigated, and it will be determined whether the refuse in its stomach played a role in its death. The contents indicate to scientists that the whale fed in Puget Sound’s industrial waters, but it is not thought to belong to the local population of grey whales that regularly appear in Puget Sound.
