DAN welcomes 2022 Interns
Divers Alert Network® is excited to introduce four interns who will be working with the organization in the months ahead to expand their knowledge of dive safety and research and to support DAN’s operations.
The DAN Internship Program was created 23 years ago to give qualified students valuable experience in dive safety research. While the program is still research-oriented, its scope has expanded over the years to include projects that focus on other facets of DAN’s mission to help divers in need and to promote dive safety through education. These interns will spend several months at DAN headquarters in Durham, NC, working with the Research, Medical Services, and Safety Services teams on various projects and research efforts.
Alex Balan is a junior studying neuroscience at Western University in London, Ontario. A diver since 2017, Alex plans to enroll in medical school following graduation. He is an active member of his local dive community, working as a divemaster at London Scuba Centre. A certified personal trainer, Alex’s research interests include nutrition, hydration, and diving health.
Liam Brennan is a senior at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and is pursuing a degree in human factors psychology. He is a divemaster, trip leader, investigator at the university’s aerospace physiology lab, and manager at its outdoor recreation program. He’ll be graduating in December and is exploring various doctorate programs and career opportunities.
Beth Jones graduated from the University of Leeds in the UK with an undergraduate degree in sport and physiology science and a master’s in nutrition. She began diving at age 16 and has a passion for travel, health, and adventure sports. She is currently pursuing a doctorate at Curtin University in Perth, Western Australia, researching bubbles in recreational divers.
Aaron Kissel is a senior economics major at Bowdoin College. A diver since 2013, Aaron volunteers at the Catalina Hyperbaric Chamber, working with patients suffering from decompression illness, assisting with dive computer testing, and helping with educational tours for local students. He plans to enroll in medical school in 2024 to become a hyperbaric physician.
“We’re looking forward to hosting these talented young people this summer,” said DAN president and CEO Bill Ziefle. “They are clearly committed to diving, and we are pleased to have this opportunity to help them grow as professionals.”
