NUPG September Meeting Report
The September NUPG meeting saw Caroline Robertson-Brown talking about a recent trip diving the northern Sea of Cortez. She and Nick had focused on just two main subjects for their photography on the 4 days liveaboard that departed from San Diego – Whale Sharks and sea lions
Caroline talked about the incredible encounters they had, in an area of the Sea of Cortez rarely dived. With only 9 divers on the liveaboard, Nautilus Gallant Lady, and no other boats in sight, they had this incredible destination to themselves. There were some photography challenges, with fast moving subjects, darting from dark caves into bright sunshine!
The competition theme was “Geometry”! There was a huge variety of images, with every entrant showing their own take of the subject title.
The Winner was Caroline Robertson-Brown with an image of a juvenile cow fish from the Philippines.
Runner-up and winner of the compact camera category was Jason Melton with his downward view of the spirals formed by Christmas Tree Worms.
In joint 3rd place was John Spencer with a spiny starfish from the Red Sea and Caroline Robertson-Brown with “UFO” – a shot from Manatee Spring in Florida.
In addition to the usual talk and competition, there was also a brief award ceremony for those that had won trophies in the NUPG Splash-In competition in August. Caroline Robertson-Brown picked up the overall trophy and the macro category award, Alex Tasker picked up the trophy for best wide angle image and Michelle Gillian was awarded Best Newcomer!
The next NUPG meeting will be held on Monday 14th October and will see Wetpixel owner, Adam Hanlon, come to speak about Creative Macro. It should be an excellent evening and everyone is welcome.
