Book Review: Dining with Divers – A Taste for Adventure
It’s pretty much a universal truth that divers love food… Not only does diving generally work up an appetite, but one of the best things about diving is the camaraderie that is enjoyed on dive boats and liveaboards all over the world, sharing experiences over good food and beer after a day underwater.
With this in mind, it’s fair to say that Simon Pridmore and David Strike have hit upon a definite ‘recipe’ for success with their Dining with Divers series, the second volume of which has just been released in time for Christmas. If you are still looking for the perfect present for the diver in your life (or yourself!), then Dining with Divers – A Taste for Adventure is an absolute must!
Both Dining with Divers books effortlessly combine fascinating diving stories with delicious recipes, written and chosen by an eclectic mix of diving personalities from around the world. In this latest book, Photographer and Conservationist Amanda Cotton shares a dive with Great Hammerhead Sharks, followed by a simple recipe for ‘Potato Pastry Perfection.’ Cave diver and Explorer Phil Short takes us deep underground in Mexico, before rustling up Oat-crusted Pan-fried Mackerel Fillets. A man of many talents! PADI’s Mark Caney regales with a rather scary story of being bitten in the mouth by a fireworm whilst leading eight trainee divers on a shore dive in Cyprus, before exacting a revenge of sorts in cooking Scallops a la Fireworm… The latter most definitely optional!
Dining with Divers – A Taste for Adventure contains over 35 memorable dive stories and recipes. The format is exceptionally easy to read, allowing you to dip in and out as and when you want to, find a recipe for dinner, or some underwater inspiration for your next dive.
And if you’re still hungry for more, Volume One, Dining with Divers – Tales from the Kitchen Table is also still available to order. This is an even larger book with contributions from Leigh Bishop, Paul Toomer, Gareth Lock, Steve Lewis, Becky Kagen Schott, Jill Heinerth, and numerous other well-known faces from the world of diving.
I’m looking forward to trying my hand at a few recipes from Volumes One and Two over the Christmas period, as well as indulging in a spot of armchair travelling with diving’s great and good as I plan my own underwater adventures for 2019. And if Simon and David are listening, I’m sharpening both my cookery skills and diving tales for Volume Three!

Dive Worldwide Announces Bite-Back as its Charity of the Year
Over the next 12 months, specialist scuba holiday company Dive Worldwide will be supporting Bite-Back Shark & Marine Conservation with donations collected from client bookings to any one of its stunning dive destinations around the world. The independently-owned operator expects to raise £3000 for the UK charity.
Manager at Dive Worldwide, Phil North, said: “We’re especially excited to work with Bite-Back and support its intelligent, creative and results-driven campaigns to end the UK trade in shark products and prompt a change in attitudes to the ocean’s most maligned inhabitant.”
Bite-Back is running campaigns to hold the media to account on the way it reports shark news along with a brand new nationwide education programme. Last year the charity was credited for spearheading a UK ban on the import and export of shark fins.
Campaign director at Bite-Back, Graham Buckingham, said: “We’re enormously grateful to Dive Worldwide for choosing to support Bite-Back. The company’s commitment to conservation helps set it apart from other tour operators and we’re certain its clients admire and respect that policy. For us, the affiliation is huge and helps us look to the future with confidence we can deliver against key conservation programmes.”
To launch the fundraising initiative, Phil North presented Graham Buckingham with a cheque for £1,000.
Visit Dive Worldwide to discover its diverse range of international scuba adventures and visit Bite-Back to learn more about the charity’s campaigns.
