Lights Camera Sub Action by Mike Seares
Lights Camera Sub Action by Mike Seares: A review by Jeff Goodman
Lights Camera Sub Action is a very good read indeed. Mike has been diving since the late seventies and has worked in the industry ever since. Working in movies as well as news and documentaries his underwater work and experience is to be truly admired.
This book tells of his journey from college to today and with great detail and enthusiasm re-lives many of his true life adventures. His writing style is conversational and as such is easy to read and understand. His memories and descriptive powers are excellent and take the reader effortlessly into a world of underwater film-making and camera work.
It seems that Mike and I started diving at around the same time in our lives and therefore many of the people he mentions from the early days are very familiar to me and bring back wonderful memories of those pioneering days in the business. Younger readers will be fascinated by the unsophisticated dive gear as well as the very basic camera housings and lights. He hides nothing and tells equally of both successes and mistakes. He also gives a very graphic insight into the technicalities and problems encountered when filming underwater. Mikes book eases away much of the mystique of filming underwater and in a way fully encourages those who are thinking of such a career to get out there and give it a go.
Mike learned to dive in 1976, and following a degree in marine biology and qualifying as a diving instructor, he has run a dive school in London, led trips around the world, and worked extensively in the film and TV industry.
