Oman has been on the diving radar for a while but it’s fabulous underwater world is no longer a secret. Now, Oman is one of the hottest destinations of the moment.

UK-based Tour Operator Scuba Travel has recently added the luxurious Oman Aggressor to its liveaboard programme. This whopping 45m yacht takes 22 divers across a choice of three cabin types: deluxe, master or suite. All boast an independently controlled air-conditioning, ensuite bathroom, mirrored cabinet, hair dryer, fresh towels and volume controls. Each stateroom has a 32inch flat screen TV offering a selection of over 400 movies, TV shows and documentaries. You can even plug your own laptop into the TV screen for the ultimate in photo or video editing!

The deluxe cabins are on the lower deck, and have twin beds. The master cabins are either as a twin or king bed. All are located on the upper deck. And then there is the impressive suite cabin on the main deck. This large cabin goes across the width of the deck. Enjoy the king size bed and glorious panoramic views.

The saloon area is a modern, airy communal space, where the all important meals area served. The menu aboard is varied and plentiful, with a variety of Omani feasts and local cuisine. Enjoy the nightly entertainment, including diving, marine life identification presentations, movies, games and more. There is a complete photo video centre for anyone with a camera. Or settle in to enjoy the views from the large sun deck with shading, a jacuzzi, sunbeds, deck chairs and bar. The dive deck is on the main deck level, and diving is a mix of off the back deck or from the tenders.

Choice from two thrilling island chains to discover in Oman. The Daymaniyat Islands are the jewels for diving in the Gulf of Oman. This string of small, rocky islands north of Muscat are encircled with awesome coral reefs down to 30m and an abundance of pelagics, rays and schooling fish. Want humpbacks? Then head to the Hallaniyat Islands. In the spring months, the resident humpback whales can be encountered, along with giant groupers, moray eels, honeycomb moray eels, dragon morays and thousands of reef fishes. Coupled with the world famous on board Aggressor service, and much loved food and drinks package, you will soon discover why the Scuba Travel team is so excited about this new destination.

Book Review: Shells of the World

Shells of the World: A Natural History by M.G. Harasewych

Shells of the world is a guide to the world of marine, shelled molluscs. And what a varied and interesting world it is. Some of my favourite things to find on a dive are detailed in this book, including disco clams (or Electric File Clams as they are correctly names), the cephalopods, giant clams and sea hares. There are also many on my wish list, top of which is the Nautilus.

Each chapter provides a detailed description of the species, along with beautiful images. You can dive deeper and discover where they live, both with global distribution and the habitat they prefer. Learn about their diet, reproduction and diversity.

Having dipped in and out of this lovely book over the past few weeks, it has inspired me to learn more about this group of animals that we see on most divers, wherever we are in the world. Some of the shells are incredibly intricate and beautiful. I have always agreed with never collecting, or touching, marine life. The description of a certain set of cone shells should be a warning to those that are happy to pick up marine life! One of the cone shells has a local name called the cigarette snail. Why? Because once the venom is in your system from this animal, you only have time to smoke one cigarette before the affects of the venom are fatal!

What the publisher says:

Mollusks are invertebrate animals with a remarkable natural history and a rich fossil record, and their shells are prized for their breathtaking variety and exquisite beauty. Shells of the World provides a wide-ranging look at the incredible diversity of marine mollusks. An informative introduction outlines the lineages covered, followed by a directory section, split into classes, that profiles a broad selection of different taxa to give a sense of their sheer numbers and variety.

  • Features hundreds of beautiful color photos, depicting both the live animals and their shells
  • Discusses mollusk evolution, anatomy, life cycles, behavior, and ecology
  • Describes unique characteristics, distribution, habitat, and size
  • Provides valuable insights into the conservation of the world’s marine mollusks
  • Ideal for malacologists and shell collectors everywhere
