Nominations now open for 2018 DAN Rolex Diver of the Year Award

Published

on

Nominations for the 2018 DAN Rolex Diver of the Year Award are now open until 31 December.

Bill Ziefle, President and CEO of DAN said:

“DAN’s mission is to help divers who need emergency medical assistance and to promote dive safety through research, education, products and services. But, we don’t do that in a vacuum. There are millions of divers safely enjoying the underwater world because of individuals who work tirelessly – and often thanklessly — behind the scenes every day to ensure they can. We want those individuals to know their work is appreciated. If you know a deserving individual, please take the time to show your appreciation by nominating them for this award.”

The DAN Rolex Diver of the Year Award began as a grant to DAN in the late 1980s to recognize its important work for dive safety. Over the years, it evolved into an annual award, complete with specially engraved Rolex watch, that acknowledges individual contributions to diving and dive safety.

The award is presented to “… an individual who has made significant contributions to dive safety and/or the DAN mission over the past year.

As the 2018 DAN Rolex Diver of the Year, the recipient joins a veritable who’s who of dive physicians, educators, and scientists – men and women who are committed to ensuring divers safely continue to enjoy diving.

The 2018 DAN Rolex Diver of the Year award recipient is selected by a committee including DAN President and CEO Bill Ziefle, senior DAN staff, at-large DAN Board members, Rolex representatives, and past award winners. All qualified nominees will be notified on 12 January 2018. The winner of the 2018 DAN Rolex Diver of the Year Award will be notified of this honor by 2 February 2018.

The 2018 DAN Rolex Diver of the Year receives an all-expenses-paid trip to the 2018 Beneath the Sea Dive Show in Secaucus, New Jersey, March 23-25, and a custom-engraved Oyster Perpetual Rolex Dive Watch. Rolex will also generously donate $15,000 to DAN to fund this experience and to support the essential safety initiatives DAN provides through medical research, services, safety education and first-aid training.

Candidates can be nominated by completing an application that showcases their contributions to dive safety. Nominations can be submitted by email to Garrett Broyles at gbroyles@dan.org no later than 31 December 2017. Full details on the application process can be found here.

Dive Worldwide Announces Bite-Back as its Charity of the Year

Over the next 12 months, specialist scuba holiday company Dive Worldwide will be supporting Bite-Back Shark & Marine Conservation with donations collected from client bookings to any one of its stunning dive destinations around the world. The independently-owned operator expects to raise £3000 for the UK charity.

Manager at Dive Worldwide, Phil North, said: “We’re especially excited to work with Bite-Back and support its intelligent, creative and results-driven campaigns to end the UK trade in shark products and prompt a change in attitudes to the ocean’s most maligned inhabitant.”

Bite-Back is running campaigns to hold the media to account on the way it reports shark news along with a brand new nationwide education programme. Last year the charity was credited for spearheading a UK ban on the import and export of shark fins.

Campaign director at Bite-Back, Graham Buckingham, said: “We’re enormously grateful to Dive Worldwide for choosing to support Bite-Back. The company’s commitment to conservation helps set it apart from other tour operators and we’re certain its clients admire and respect that policy. For us, the affiliation is huge and helps us look to the future with confidence we can deliver against key conservation programmes.”

To launch the fundraising initiative, Phil North presented Graham Buckingham with a cheque for £1,000.
