Volunteers needed for 16th annual National Whale and Dolphin Watch
Sea Watch Foundation need your help! This summer from 29th July – 6th August, the UK marine environmental charity need volunteers to host/take part in watches for National Whale and Dolphin Watch.
National Whale and Dolphin Watch (NWDW) is aimed at people who have the opportunity to access the coast but with over 19 thousand miles of coast there is plenty to choose from. Different areas around the UK will find various combinations of the 29 species of whale, dolphin and porpoise that have been recorded here. During previous NWDW, up to 13 different species have been noticed and unusual species such as a beluga whale have even shown up!
This will be the 16th annual NWDW and this year Sea Watch is hoping to make it bigger and better than ever! Last year there were over 1400 sightings and even more watch hours completed than previous years. Sea Watch would love to keep this momentum going with even more volunteers/groups taking part than ever before.
Despite the successes, last year the charity actually saw a fall in the number of watch sites around the UK and this is where you could help! Could you go out and collect data on whales and dolphins during this year’s event? To keep a track of all the activities that are going on, Sea Watch need you to register your watches with them now in the run up to the event. You can always add more watches later. Sea Watch welcome watches on the land and at sea and are here to support you through your events. If you’re a beginner, you can also join other watches that will be organised.
If you would be happy to host an event, or a few, throughout the period of 29th July – 6th August, please get in contact to register your participation and you will be sent an observers pack which should have everything you require for a fin-tastic National Whale and Dolphin Watch.

Dive Worldwide Announces Bite-Back as its Charity of the Year
Over the next 12 months, specialist scuba holiday company Dive Worldwide will be supporting Bite-Back Shark & Marine Conservation with donations collected from client bookings to any one of its stunning dive destinations around the world. The independently-owned operator expects to raise £3000 for the UK charity.
Manager at Dive Worldwide, Phil North, said: “We’re especially excited to work with Bite-Back and support its intelligent, creative and results-driven campaigns to end the UK trade in shark products and prompt a change in attitudes to the ocean’s most maligned inhabitant.”
Bite-Back is running campaigns to hold the media to account on the way it reports shark news along with a brand new nationwide education programme. Last year the charity was credited for spearheading a UK ban on the import and export of shark fins.
Campaign director at Bite-Back, Graham Buckingham, said: “We’re enormously grateful to Dive Worldwide for choosing to support Bite-Back. The company’s commitment to conservation helps set it apart from other tour operators and we’re certain its clients admire and respect that policy. For us, the affiliation is huge and helps us look to the future with confidence we can deliver against key conservation programmes.”
To launch the fundraising initiative, Phil North presented Graham Buckingham with a cheque for £1,000.
Visit Dive Worldwide to discover its diverse range of international scuba adventures and visit Bite-Back to learn more about the charity’s campaigns.
