DiveGlide
The only way to fly… underwater, that is! After many years of designing and testing, the world’s first recreational underwater glider, the “DiveGlide”, is here. This new form of diving allows divers to move through the water with speed like never before in a similar way to marine life without mechanical sound. Other attributes are no batteries, no electric motor or propellers, and very little maintenance. The energy comes from scuba tanks and weights and the forward motion is created by manipulating its buoyancy and changing the angle of attack of the wing. Underwater gliding (or buoyancy gliding) has a very natural feel, much like surfing or sailing. Novice or experienced, everyone who tries it finds it very exciting. Glenn Faires, owner of Golden Rock Dive Center on St.Eustatius and inventor of the DiveGlide, says “It’s like crawling all your life and then one day you can fly!” He goes on to say that while it’s not for everyone, the possible applications are numerous, and we will have to wait and see what divers will do with it. Every time someone tries it the first time they hit the surface all you hear is laughter and then “I want one!!” The only way to really get it is to fly it yourself, Faires said. The DiveGlide is presently being built to order, and currently only available to fly in St. Eustatius with Glenn; however, manufacturing, distribution and licensing agreements are currently being sought out.
DiveGlide is also now available for demonstrations and training at water sports events and diving destinations. If you think you’ve done it all in the water or just want to try something new, you have to check this out.
