Steel Comp: The Freediving Mask That Fits
INTRODUCING SUBGEAR’S STEEL COMP MASK
The innovative Steel Comp from Subgear is the ultimate freediving mask. The unique frameless double-lens design concept allows the mask to compress as the water pressure increases. With the lowest internal volume possible, the amount of air the freediver requires to equalise is reduced; something that freedivers will really appreciate.
The breakthrough frameless double-lens Steel Comp has the lowest possible internal volume, therefore equalising is only necessary later than usual. In addition, the increasing water pressure compresses the mask so equalisation is not so frequently required. As the water pressure increases, the bridge between the lenses bends slightly and gradually squeezes the mask tighter to the face. The only noticeable indication of this is a short change in vision as the eyes need a split second to adjust. This is the biggest advantage over round glass masks to freedivers, as the vision is always distorted with round mask glasses – but with the Steel Comp the eyes are able to adjust, offering freedivers normal vision. However, it is not recommended that the mask is used for scuba diving as wearing the mask for long periods can lead to a feeling of numbness.
“When taking photos and videos it is always very important to me to have both hands free. With the new freediving masks from SUBGEAR I can just attach a nose clip to the mask and still have no problems to equalise at 25m depth. Due to the flexibility of the mask the need to equalise is hardly there.”
Benjamin Bartoli, underwater photographer & board member AIDA Germany
The flat, ultra-clear, scratch resistant glass guarantees undistorted vision with real underwater colours. The frameless design together with the soft skirt offers a universal fit and a sleek appearance. The pivoting buckles and the adjustable flexible band ensure that the mask sits perfectly where it should.
STEEL PRO
The single-lens mask has the same features and a very low internal volume like the Steel Comp but without the ability to compress at greater depths as there is no bridge piece across the nose. The advantage is however, that the Steel Pro can also be used for scuba diving.
The Steel Comp and the Steel Pro are available in black, white and clear from your local authorised Subgear dealer. The masks are delivered complete with protective box. RRP £37.

Oyster Diving have recently been given exclusive access to offer scuba diving courses and fun dives at Mercers Lake, a beautiful lake near M25/Gatwick in the UK.
Oyster have just launched their own dive boat ‘The Blue Pear’ to explore various parts of the lake. Divers can glide around the underwater woodland, see lots of fish and decent visibility. Out of the water divers set up in the purpose built kitting up area, unwind in a warm shower, and off-gas in the café & licensed bar.
To celebrate the start of the summer season, AquaSports and Oyster Diving have teamed up to host a Star Wars-themed open day on the 4th May.
Guests will be able to enjoy discounted tasters of various watersports including Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP), Canoeing and Sailing. Oyster Diving will be joined by Apeks and possibly other dive manufacturers to display their latest products. Demo gear will be available for qualified divers and Oyster’s sales support team will be on hand for customers with any questions.
Divers wishing to get in the water will need to book in via Oyster Diving’s website where you can also choose to hire any equipment. Non-divers and well behaved dogs are very welcome!
As well as the watersports there will also be music, food and a licensed bar. The fun starts at 10am and finishes around 4.30pm.
