Officials with the Florida Fish & Wildlife Commission said they recovered the bodies Christmas Day of a father and son who went missing after diving in the Chassahowitzka Wildlife Refuge near Weeki Wachee.

After getting new dive equipment as Christmas gifts, Darrin Spivey and his son, Dillon Sanchez went to Eagle’s Nest Sink before noon to dive.

Unable to reach Spivey by phone, his fiance, Holly King, called law enforcement around 3:00 p.m.

Emergency workers located the bodies inside underwater caves around 8:30 p.m.

Spivey, 35, was certified to dive, but was not certified for cave diving.  Sanchez, 15, was not certified to dive.

Also known as Lost Sink, the Eagle’s Nest Sink is a large cave system near Weeki Wachee.  It’s is considered an advanced dive due to the distance from help and the depths found there.
