Introducing Talia, ‘Angel’ of the Indian Ocean
Mark Milligan was the lucky winner of the Scuba Tours Worldwide ‘Name the Manta’ competition held at the Dive Show last weekend. Mark named the manta Talia, meaning ‘angel who escorts the sun on its daily course’. Quite perfect for this graceful, angelic creature! Mark’s prize is a ‘Commando Escape Sub Three Zero’ BCD kindly donated by AP Valves and worth over £300.
Talia’s name is now updated in the extensive database held by Anne-Marie Kitchen-Wheeler, Cruise Director in the Maldives for Scuba Tours Worldwide. Anne-Marie has a unique PhD in Manta Behaviour and Ecology in the Maldives and her database was built up over many years whilst studying these amazing animals. Previously known as 1850 D587, Talia was originally logged in Anne-Marie’s database back in 2007 when she was first seen pregnant. She has been spotted a few times since, usually in Ari Atoll.
Scuba Tours Worldwide have been running dive trips to the Maldives for 24 years and have built up extensive knowledge about the behaviour and migration patterns of manta rays. Their liveaboard boats, MV Sea Queen and MV Sea Spirit, operate ‘Manta & Whaleshark’ itineraries and currently have two special ‘Manta Research Trips’ scheduled for November and April which will be hosted by Anne-Marie.
