Unfortunately, many species of seahorses are on the World Conservation Union’s threatened species list, due to fishing and the destruction of their habitats. Many species, however, are listed as “Data Deficient,” meaning we just don’t know whether they’re facing extinction or not. This is where citizen science can help.
A new project called iSeahorse aims to raise the number of people on the lookout for seahorses by allowing anyone to catalogue any seahorse sightings they experience through an iPhone app and website.
Scientists from Project Seahorse and the iSeahorse network will use the vital information that is gathered from people using the app to better understand seahorse behaviour, species ranges, and the threats seahorses face.
