Security guard kills British dive shop operator in the Philippines
A British man who opened a scuba diving business in the Philippines has been shot dead.
Tony Gilchrist, 35, from Staines, Surrey, was reportedly shot six times at his shop, Fish Buddies, on the island of Malapascua on Saturday.
His killer was alleged to have been a security guard who he had dismissed for turning up late for work after a drinking session.
A UK Foreign Office spokeswoman said they were “aware of the death”.
His alleged killer was named in local news reports as 42-year-old Melchor Alciso Jr, from Hinundayan, Southern Leyte, in the Philippines.
It has been reported that Mr Gilchrist had distributed thousands of pounds worth of aid raised in the UK following Typhoon Haiyan which destroyed large parts of the Philippines in November.
A Foreign Office spokeswoman added: “We are providing consular assistance to the family at this difficult time.”
