There are about six thousand species of coral around the world, with some species growing in warm shallow waters near coastlines and others thriving on the dark, cold seafloor of the open ocean.
Though coral may look like a colorful plant growing from roots on the seafloor, it is actually an animal. Coral reefs are among the most complex and fascinating marine ecosystems in the sea, and they include a wide range of symbiotic relationships. Coral reefs are sometimes known as the “rainforests of the sea.”
Coral reefs not only provide marine species with a rich habitat but also assist people as well. Millions of people around the world rely on fish caught in and around coral reefs. The reefs also draw in tourists, which helps the local economies. Coral reefs protect people and land from storms as well, serving as a barrier that reduces the impact of large waves on a shore.
With growth rates of 0.3 to 2 centimeters per year for massive corals and up to 10 centimeters per year for branching corals, it can take up to 10,000 years for a coral reef to form from a group of larvae. Depending on their size, barrier reefs and atolls can take from 100,000 to 30,000,000 years to fully form.
And a person is able to destroy everything and everyone in seconds. What's this?
After all, it is thanks to the beautiful reefs in Egypt that there is tourism.
But who thinks about the future? What kind of planet will we leave to the next generations? Who is the most dangerous on the planet?
P.S. Of course, I informed the authorities of the Ras Mohammed National Park about this situation, and measures were taken. But unfortunately, punishment will not restore the reef. Or maybe as a punishment, it is necessary to create new reef plantations?
