The Art and Science of Underwater Photography by Georgie Bull at the June NUPG Meeting (Watch Video)
The June 2021 NUPG meeting saw Georgie Bull take to the virtual stage. Georgie not only talked about her budding career as an underwater photographer, but also enthused about her love of seagrass and how underwater photography can help conserve this vital habitat. It was great to learn so much about what is (perhaps) an underrated ecosystem and the marine life that calls it home.
Georgie introduced us to the marine biology and conservation topics most important to her and how that effect her approach to underwater photography. The group talked about the nearest seagrass beds to them in the North-West of England, and decided that North Wales was the best and nearest place for members to go and look and photograph it for themselves.
As always, the NUPG members also had a chance to show off some of their images in the monthly competition. This month’s theme was Spots vs Stripes. Caroline Robertson-Brown took the winning image of Banggai Cardinalfish in Secret Bay in Bali, Indonesia.
The runner up was John Spencer with his image of a Blue-Spotted Stingray in the Red Sea
Joint 3rd place was shared by Nick Robertson-Brown with a shot of a Tiger Shark in The Bahamas and John Spencer with an image of Razorfish.

Dive Worldwide Announces Bite-Back as its Charity of the Year
Over the next 12 months, specialist scuba holiday company Dive Worldwide will be supporting Bite-Back Shark & Marine Conservation with donations collected from client bookings to any one of its stunning dive destinations around the world. The independently-owned operator expects to raise £3000 for the UK charity.
Manager at Dive Worldwide, Phil North, said: “We’re especially excited to work with Bite-Back and support its intelligent, creative and results-driven campaigns to end the UK trade in shark products and prompt a change in attitudes to the ocean’s most maligned inhabitant.”
Bite-Back is running campaigns to hold the media to account on the way it reports shark news along with a brand new nationwide education programme. Last year the charity was credited for spearheading a UK ban on the import and export of shark fins.
Campaign director at Bite-Back, Graham Buckingham, said: “We’re enormously grateful to Dive Worldwide for choosing to support Bite-Back.
