This trip coincides with the 70th Anniversary of ‘Operation Hailstone’ during which the US army laid siege to Truk Lagoon in a bid to destroy the Japanese navy’s forward military base stationed there and in retaliation for their attack on Pearl Harbour. This was a relentless assault, lasting two days over 17th/18th February 1944, during which 30 waves of American bombers destroyed over 60 vessels and around 250 Japanese planes.
Diving in Truk Lagoon is pretty easy – being a sheltered lagoon, there is little current to deal with and sea conditions are usually very favourable. Some wrecks are in very shallow waters – just a few meters below the surface – while the deepest is at 65m. Typically, the wrecks lie in waters between 28m and 45m.
