Wrapping up 2018 in Sharm el Sheikh (Watch Video)
With 2018 almost wrapped up, I thought I would take this opportunity to look back over some of the fabulous events that have happened over the year in Sharm el Sheikh.
2018 started with Camel Dive Club & Hotel plus other dive centres bringing Sharm el Sheikh to you. The dive shows are always fabulous fun and a great way to catch up with existing Sharm divers and possibly persuade new divers to visit too.
With the shows out of the way, we were ready to get back to the warmer weather and take you all diving. And boy, has 2018 been a momentous year for diving in Sharm el Sheikh.
The sightings of manta rays, sharks, turtles, whale sharks have definitely increased over the last year. I don’t think that there has been one day where our divers at Camel Dive Club have returned from the boat and not made all the office staff jealous by telling us what they have seen. It wasn’t just the big stuff either, the coral has blossomed resulting in an amazing panoramic underwater landscape too.
There were quite a few land based events in 2018 as well. PADI Women’s Day was a great success in Sharm with most of the major dive centers hosting an event, be it in the form of clean up dives, barbeques and generally having fun and celebrating women in diving. Camel Dive Club & Hotel decided to create a short video aimed at female solo travelers that are thinking of visiting Sharm el Sheikh. We were exceptionally proud to have won the PADI competition for short videos of PADI Women’s Dive Day and to hear that they will use parts of it to promote next year’s event.
Another landmark event in Sharm el Sheikh was the Hyperbaric Chamber’s 25th Birthday celebrations. The celebrations spanned four days and included a scientific day with lectures mainly addressing the diving community, an open day at the recompression chamber with an exhibit of pictures of “old Sharm and Sharmers”, a DAN Divers Day and a day of gorgeous boat diving for the invited speakers and special guests. It was an extraordinary event that really amalgamated the entire of the Sharm community.
Bringing you back to the water, there were also a lot of underwater clean ups by Sharm el Sheikh Dive centers. Camel Dive Club alone managed to collect over 100 kg of underwater debris during 2018, which is an awful lot when you think that the majority of it was plastic.
One of the proudest moments of 2018 for the whole Camel Team was all Camel outlets going plastic straw FREE! This was a revolutionary move in Egypt, where currently there are no reusable or biodegradable straw suppliers.
Many other exciting events occurred in Sharm el Sheikh as well, unfortunately too numerous to mention here. My best suggestion, so that you don’t miss out on the 2019 news, is to come and visit for yourselves.
On that note, I wish you a HAPPY NEW YEAR and a great 2019, full of diving adventures (hopefully in Sharm el Sheikh).
