Divers in Cyprus get fantastic early Christmas present this week – a new wreck!
After a culmination of 9 years of joint efforts between the Cyprus Dive Centre Association (CDCA)’s board members, a new wreck program begins this coming Friday 20th December with the sinking of the Nemesis III, a 24.5 metre-long bottom trawler.
The Nemesis III, which will be sunk next to the Liberty wreck in the Protaras area of Cyprus at a depth of approximately 23 metres, is the first of four artificial reefs that the CDCA are planning to deploy over the next few months.
All four wrecks have been cleaned and prepared for sinking and have all the relevant documentation required to ensure strict compliance with the 1976 Barcelona Convention for Protection against Pollution in the Mediterranean Sea.
The project (preparation, cleaning and deployment of all four vessels) has cost approximately 300,000 euro and has been co-funded by the European Union, European Fisheries Fund 2007-2013 and the Government of Cyprus. The vessels were donated to the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research by the Cyprus Tourist Organization, the CDCA and the Municipality of Limassol. The total cost to buy the vessels was around 60,000 euro.
The CDCA are confident that the project will boost tourism for Cyprus significantly and that all involved will see a good return on their investment over the next few years.
