PADI launches Adaptive Techniques Specialty
The new PADI Adaptive Techniques Specialty course has officially launched to PADI Members at the 2017 DEMA Show. The course is unique in that it’s a pro-level specialty designed to educate and empower PADI Professionals who wish to make scuba and freediver training more accessible.
Scuba and freediving have proven therapeutic benefits for individuals with disabilities and PADI Instructors have a long history of successfully adapting training for divers with mental or physical challenges. This new course builds on that solid foundation by broadening awareness and expanding on adaptive teaching techniques learned during PADI Instructor and Divemaster training. The launch of the Adaptive Techniques Specialty supports the Healing and Wellness Pillar of PADI’s Pillars of Change, which is focused on committing to the deeper purpose of helping others live fuller lives through scuba or freediving.
Through classroom, confined water and open water workshops, dive professionals further cultivate their ability to be student-centered and prescriptive in approach when adapting techniques to meet diver needs. This hands-on training increases awareness of differing abilities and explores adaptive teaching techniques to apply when training divers with physical and mental challenges. PADI Pros learn to adapt course content to accommodate virtually any student diver.
The PADI Adaptive Techniques Specialty program also includes a subcourse, Adaptive Support Diver, that’s designed for divers who want to learn how to support dive buddies with physical and mental disabilities. Certified divers who are at least 15 years old and have current CPR/first aid training may enroll in the Adaptive Support Diver course.
