Deptherapy announces new partnerships and a Truk expedition at DIVE 2016
At DIVE 2016 yesterday (Sunday 23rd October), Deptherapy announced a partnership with the Endeavour Fund, part of The Royal Foundations of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry.
Deptherapy is a UK-based charity that seeks to rehabilitate seriously injured British Armed Services Personnel who have suffered life changing mental or physical injuries through the medium of scuba diving.
Next year the Endeavour Fund will support Deptherapy by providing money for dry suits so the charity can get more injured servicemen diving. The Fund will also support Deptherapy’s PADI Open Water courses, with the organisation committing to training 16 novice divers next year.
The Endeavour Fund really wants to seek out those harder-to-reach Service personnel and veterans who are still struggling to come to terms with life after injury and who would benefit the most from being involved with an endeavour.
Deptherapy also announced a partnership with the Faculty of Medicine at Sheffield University. It will be a two year project that will analyse the benefits of the Deptherapy programme in terms of physical and mental health and how it helps rehabilitation. The project was the brainchild Hannah Higgins, a fourth year medical student at the University who also won Miss Scuba UK this year. It will be supervised by Richard Castle, one of Deptherapy’s Vice Presidents who himself is a consultant in trauma and mental illness.
The charity also announced a major expedition to Truk Lagoon in 2018, which will be a huge challenge for the divers they take along and will require a detailed and strict build up programme. The challenge will be massive, but Deptherapy say that the development opportunities for programme members will be amazing – and for some, life changing.
The charity will be working with Coral Cay on an environmental study looking at the health of the coral in the Lagoon, and is currently seeking sponsors for both financial support and dive equipment.
