Indonesia Wins Worldwide Recognition for its Coral Reef Management

The Indonesian Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (MMAF) has announced that Indonesia was awarded the CORAL Conservation Prize, presented by the Coral Reef Alliance (CORAL) on the 20th September in San Francisco for its sustainable coral reef management.

The MMAF conveyed that this achievement was due to three strategic measures undertaken by the Indonesian government – the strong commitment towards coral conservation policy by establishing marine conservation management; combining marine resource management and protection followed by prudent resource utilization; and strengthening the global partnership in coral reef management.

Sharif C. Sutardjo, Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, who accepted the award, said: “I encourage the global community to undergo systemic, comprehensive and synchronized efforts which will lead to the establishment of a policy in coral reef utilization and management.”

On the same occasion, two Indonesian coral reef activists, Nyoman Sugiarta and Abdul Manap were named the winners of CORAL Conservation Prizes for their significant roles in saving and conserving coral reefs. They were awarded among seven nominees from Fiji, Hawaii, Honduras, Mexico, and Palmyra.

Coral reefs are inexplicably beneficial, both ecologically and economically. In the pearl sector, for example, Indonesia has been the world’s largest pearl producer since 2005, claiming 50% of the world’s pearl production with an export value of more than US$29 million.

On this occasion, Sharif reminded the attendees that utilization not backed up by the sufficient and sustainable long-term conservation will increase the risk of coral extinction. According to a report by Washington’s World Resource Institute (WRI), it is predicted that if overexploitation continues with no change, the world’s coral reefs will eventually be extinct in 2050.

To overcome these kinds of dangers, the MMAF constantly protects and manages marine and fishery resource sustainably through a number of marine conservation initiatives. The commitment has also been realized by the establishment of a Marine Protected Area reaching 16 million hectares. The MMAF is also actively engaged in a number of both regional and multilateral forums, such as Coral Triangle Initiative (CTI), World Coral Reef Conference (WCRC), World Wildlife Fund (WWF), and Leibniz-Zentrum fur Marine Tropenokologie (ZMT).
