Sign Greenpeace UK’s Petition to Save the Whales

After 30 years, the global ban on commercial whaling is under threat.

Over the past three decades, many whale populations have slowly started to recover. But some countries are seeing this as an opportunity to restart commercial whaling.

We can’t let this happen. On October 24th members of the International Whaling Commission (IWC) will meet to talk about the future of whale conservation. For a long time the UK has been one of the leading voices opposing killing whales for profit, so it’s vital that George Eustice (the UK minister responsible for the marine environment) stands firm against any threat to undermine the ban.

In their pre-election manifesto, the Conservatives said “We will oppose any resumption of commercial whaling”. Together we need to ensure that George Eustice sticks to this commitment.

Whales are beautiful, awe-inspiring creatures that are a vital part of a healthy ocean ecosystem. But whaling ships are not the only threat they face. Climate change, ocean plastics, toxic pollution and destructive over-fishing all threaten these incredible creatures.

We need George Eustice to not only reject any efforts to weaken the ban, but also to push for increased conservation measures. One decision that’s on the table at this conference is the creation of a new whale sanctuary in the South Atlantic – a move that would protect the habitat that whales need to survive and thrive.

We’re at a critical point in the battle to preserve and protect whales – it’s vital that the UK stands up to those who want to see the reintroduction of commercial whaling. For the future of whales but also for the future health of the world’s oceans – George Eustice must do the right thing.

Tell George Eustice to protect the ban on whaling and vote to create a new sanctuary by signing our petition here.
