Oonasdivers Announce New Red Sea Shark Workshop

oonasdivers logoUK-based tour operator Oonasdivers have announced a date for their next ‘Shark Raving Mad’ workshop in the Red Sea.

Running from the 30th October – 2nd November 2015 (full trip dates 28th October – 4 November), the workshop will take place in the Southern Dive Village of Marsa Shagra with Marine Biologist Elke Bojanowski.

Dr. Bojanowski has been conducting shark research in Egypt since October 2004. Her research focuses on photo-identification studies of local shark populations, mainly oceanic whitetip sharks, but also grey reef and silky sharks. Additionally a general shark monitoring project has been carried out since 2010.

Marsa Shagra in southern Egypt is the ideal location to learn about shark behaviour and biology from an expert and dive the world famous Elphinstone reef to be in with a chance to see sharks up close and personal.

The Red Sea Sharks workshop is aimed at divers interested in learning about different aspects of sharks, their biology and conservation. Focus is on the more common Red Sea shark species and the research projects conducted under the umbrella of the Red Sea Sharks Trust. No previous knowledge of sharks is required.

Elke Workshop

Evening 1: Introduction to Red Sea Sharks, their biology, how to identify and dive with them
Evening 2: Shark behavior and interactions with humans
Evening 3: Shark conservation & research

Weather permitting, there will be daily dive trips to Elphinstone (2 dives a day over 3 days) to hopefully encounter some of these amazing predators underwater.

Those who wish to dive in Elphinstone must hold a minimum of 50 dives, and PADI AOWD or CMAS 2** qualification. Whilst we recommend following the full workshop program, participants can decide to attend only evening lectures and a lower number of Elphinstone dives if they wish.

The cost for the Workshop is only £200 per person (on top of your holiday package from £795) and includes 6 dives in Elphinstone over 3 days and 3 evening lectures. You can even can do a PADI Shark Awareness specialty for an extra £40.

The BiG Scuba Podcast… with Stephan Whelan

Next in a new series of podcasts shared by our friends Gemma and Ian aka The BiG Scuba Podcast…

Ian and Gemma chat to Stephan Whelan.  Stephan is the Founder and Publisher of His passion for the underwater world started at 8 years-old with a try-dive in a hotel pool on holiday that soon formulated into a lifelong love affair with the oceans and led him to become one of the leading figures in the diving media industry.

Stephan got bitten by the diving bug early in life. His first scuba experience was a try-dive when he was eight years old on a family holiday in Europe, and from that moment, he was addicted. He learned to dive properly with BSAC (British Sub Aqua Club) as soon as he could at school and then did his BSAC Assistant Instructor when he turned 16. By the time he was heading to university in 1996, he was hooked on teaching and diving as much as he could.

By the time he started studying at university, he decided to have a go at flexing his web-design skills by publishing some of the stories he had built up about various ‘challenging’ students and dives he had encountered, and so (as it was known then) was created. He published numerous personal stories until 1998 when other writers began enquiring about contributing to the site with their tales, and it was at this moment he decided to make it more like a magazine format and began asking for volunteer helpers. He got a couple of editors on board, and plenty of writers began contributing. (or DB as it’s become to be known) is now one of the most-popular diving websites in the world and has grown to publish over 9,000 articles covering all sorts of topics like Freediving, Scuba Diving, Ocean Advocacy, and Diving Travel all the while keeping over half-a-million passionate divers from the diving community connected every month through the forums, large social media following, mobile app, and recently launched podcast.
