New Series: Wildlife Winners and Losers – Part 1 (Watch Video)
Richard Brock worked in the BBC Natural History Unit for 35 years producing, among others, the highly successful Life on Earth and Living Planet series with David Attenborough.
I first met Richard back in the late eighties when we worked together on a film in the Bahamas about Lemon Sharks. Although I didn’t realise fully at the time, I was frustrated at the lack of attention given to conservation in general programming at the BBC and other broadcasters. Richard was way ahead of me and concerned by the lack of willingness to address the real current state of the environment, he left the BBC and started his own independent production company Living Planet Productions.
Richard Brock:
“My series “Wildlife Winners and Losers” looks carefully with well-documented evidence at these changes – past, present and particularly the future. Using previously unseen footage from the recent past we bring the story right up to date and try to look forward as to the winners and the losers we might expect – and why. As far as I know, no one has done this so deliberately around the world with so many species and places. And you can help too… With films across over eighty subjects, we find many examples of winners, or, at least those trying not to be losers!”
On his website Richard says:
“It’s a call to action! A unique opportunity to help the planet! We’ve been celebrating nature by bringing its wonders to the TV screen all over the world. Now that world is changing, faster and faster, and nature needs help. Films can do that, at a local level, be it with decision makers in the government or in the village. These films are yours to view and, please pass on.”
There are 80+ environmental films to look at on the Brock Initiative YouTube channel. Many of these look at the marine environment and its wildlife, and we at Scubaverse are delighted to share these films over the coming weeks.
The first film is ‘Turkey’s Treasures – BADEM – The Amazing Monk Seal’.
With a local guide Zafer, Richard reveals rare monk seals, fishing conservation and local life.

Leading UK-based shark conservation charity, the Shark Trust, is delighted to announce tour operator Diverse Travel as a Corporate Patron
Corporate Patrons provide a valuable boost to the work of The Shark Trust. The Trust team works globally to safeguard the future of sharks, and their close cousins, the skates and rays, engaging with a global network of scientists, policymakers, conservation professionals, businesses and supporters to further shark conservation.
Specialist tour operator Diverse Travel has operated since 2014 and is committed to offering its guests high quality, sustainable scuba diving holidays worldwide. Working together with the Shark Trust will enable both organisations to widen engagement and encourage divers and snorkellers to actively get involved in shark conservation.
“Sharks are truly at the heart of every diver and at Diverse Travel, we absolutely share that passion. There is nothing like seeing a shark in the wild – it’s a moment that stays with you forever!” says Holly Bredin, Sales & Marketing Manager, Diverse Travel.
“We’re delighted to celebrate our 10th year of business by becoming a Corporate Patron of the Shark Trust. This is an exciting partnership for Diverse and our guests. We will be donating on behalf of every person who books a holiday with us to contribute towards their vital shark conservation initiatives around the world. We will also be working together with the Trust to inspire divers, snorkellers and other travellers to take an active role – at home and abroad – in citizen science projects and other activities.”
Paul Cox, CEO of The Shark Trust, said:
“It’s an exciting partnership and we’re thrilled to be working with Diverse Travel to enable more divers and travellers to get involved with sharks and shark conservation. Sharks face considerable conservation challenges but, through collaboration and collective action, we can secure a brighter future for sharks and their ocean home. This new partnership takes us one more valuable step towards that goal.”
