My First Women’s Dive Day: Diving, Dogs, and Pink Flags

Women’s Dive Day

5, 4, 3, 2, 1, action—we’re back!

What I’m going to be talking about today is a special day dedicated to women. It’s PADI’s International Women’s Dive Day! Dive On It Scuba hosted a Women’s Dive Day event in Jamestown, RI, and it was SO MUCH FUN.

In the morning, my mom and I went to RI Guys, a local doughnut and cake shop, to pick up a special cake decorated like a pink diver down flag just for the occasion. Then we made our way to Ft. Wetherill with my dog, Reef, as the official mascot. I even ordered him a diver down doggie scarf to wear for the big day.

When we got there, my mom went diving with a group while I stayed on land to look after Reef. I took him swimming, and he met a lot of other dogs at the beach. He had a great time!

Later, when everyone who had signed up for Women’s Dive Day arrived, we split into groups and started our dive. This was the dive I’d really been looking forward to. It was a blast, and everyone was super nice. Even my instructor Seamus and another Divemaster, John, came to celebrate with us. It wasn’t just girls—everyone was welcome! This time, my mom stayed on land with Reef while I went diving.

We dove for about 30 minutes, then came back and fired up the grill. We had a tent with hot dogs, chips, water, and, of course, the special cake. John cooked hot dogs for everyone. After we’d eaten, we brought out the cake—it looked just like a diver down flag, but in pink instead of red to celebrate women in diving.

Women’s Dive DayMost people started heading out after that, but my mom, John, and Seamus fit in one more dive. I chose to stay back again and hang out with Reef.

This event was so much fun, and I think it’s really important to celebrate. I’ve spent a lot of time at the dive shop, and most of the employees are boys. I think it’s great to highlight that women are a big part of ocean conservation too. I was really proud that my mom helped Dive On It Scuba organize such a special day that brought together so many girls who love diving.

There was even a mom diving with her daughter, who was a lot older than me. It reminded me of when I go diving with my own mom—something we’ll be able to do together forever.

I really hope we get to do this event again next year. I loved being a part of it, and everyone had fun—even the boys!

I’ll catch you all next time. Sea you later!
