Diving in the lakes of the Austrian Alps – watch video

Published

on

These two mountain lakes (Lake Fernstein & Lake Samaranger) are located in midst of the Austrian alps at an altitude of approximately 1000 meters above sea level, and are considered an absolute highlight when it comes to diving in mountain lakes in Europe. They are a main attraction of the region and draw numerous divers from all over Europe.

Lake Samaranger is so incredibly clear (because of it’s subterranean water supply), it feels like you are hovering in space! The special algae (which looks a bit like candy floss) that covers most of the lake’s bottom as well as the fallen trees that are scattered around gives the whole diving experience here a very special feel.

Whether or not you are a fresh water diver, this place is most definitely worth a visit and is like a trip into a fairytale world.

Matthias, originally a banker from Switzerland, found his real passion when he started traveling the world in 2004 and discovered scuba diving on the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. Very shortly after that he became a PADI Instructor himself and started passing on his passion to numerous students for several years in different tropical locations across the world. In 2011 he returned to Switzerland and started working in a marketing role for a dive tour operator. A former Underwater Videography student of Scubaverse's very own Jeff Goodman, Matthias films his underwater adventures with the purpose of showing people what wonders lie beneath the water's surface.

Usually the January NUPG meeting involves a guest judge coming to Manchester to talk through the very best images members had taken in the previous 12 months. However, this year, due to COVID19 restriction many of the members had not had the chance to dive. The NUPG committee decided to change the rules a little. So this year members judged a series of Best of the Century images online and were also invited to take part in a lockdown underwater bath tub category.

There were five categories for members to enter. Here are the winners of each…
