As divers venture out this summer to explore the underwater world, their excitement may be tempered by concerns about how COVID-19 could affect their travel plans. But DAN has the coverage its members need to travel boldly and confidently.
In February of this year DAN launched Enhanced Membership, which includes a higher benefit limit for medical transportation (up to $500,000), a continuing subscription to the print edition of Alert Diver magazine, and expanded travel assistance benefits, including search and rescue coverage and global security evacuation coverage. Now, Enhanced Membership also includes severe infectious disease and quarantine coverage.
If you’ve already upgraded to Enhanced Membership, the severe infectious disease and quarantine coverage is included automatically. With this coverage, members are eligible to receive the following benefits (see DAN membership handbook and policy for complete terms, conditions, and limitations):
Daily Quarantine Benefit: If your trip is delayed 48 hours or more because you are in quarantine, DAN will pay (up to the benefit limit) a per-day quarantine benefit for each day you remain in quarantine. This includes expenses incurred as a direct result of you being in quarantine, such as unused, non-refundable travel arrangements or accommodations, reasonable additional expenses (e.g., meals and phone calls) and economy transportation so you can rejoin the covered trip or return home.
Severe Infectious Disease Evacuation Benefit: If a severe infectious disease outbreak occurs while on a covered trip, and the outbreak occurs within a 15-mile radius of your location, DAN will pay (up to the benefit limit) the cost of transportation to evacuate you from your location to the nearest place of safety. Once the outbreak passes, this benefit will also pay (up to the benefit limit) for transportation and related costs so you can rejoin the covered trip or return home.
All transportation arrangements must be by the most direct and economical conveyance and route possible. DAN TravelAssist must make all arrangements and must authorize all expenses in advance.
Severe Infectious Disease Testing Benefit: If while you are on a trip a severe infectious disease outbreak occurs and testing is required, this benefit will pay (up to the benefit limit) for up to three severe infectious disease tests per covered trip. This benefit covers both antigen and PCR tests.
DAN is committed to providing the most up-to-date and relevant coverage and benefits for divers and travelers. Join, renew, or upgrade to Enhanced Membership.
UK Shark Fin ban moves closer to becoming law
Bite-Back Shark & Marine Conservation’s relentless campaigns to make Britain shark fin-free reached a new milestone last week when a private member’s bill to ban the import and export of shark fins was voted through parliament with unanimous cross-party support.
The bill is now scheduled for three readings in the House of Lords and, if successful, it will then go to King Charles for Royal Ascent and become law.
Campaign director for Bite-Back, Graham Buckingham, said:
“Our goal of ending Britain’s ties with the global shark fin trade is within our reach. This country has a dark history of exporting around 20 tonnes of shark fins every year and it remains legal to bring up to 20kg of dried shark fins through Customs without needing to declare it. This bill could represent a significant blow to the multi-million-pound shark fin industry. It’s now down to the House of Lords to smooth its path to the palace.”
Since July 2022 the charity has been consulting the Labour MP Christina Rees who put forward the private member’s bill after the government failed to bring its Animal Welfare Bill, that promised to ban the import and export of shark fins, into law last year.
To help improve support for the bill, Bite-Back also created a briefing document on the issues for all MPs to reference. During the bill’s final reading in the House of Commons MPs from different parties wholeheartedly endorsed the ban on the import and export of shark fins.
In her closing statement Christina Rees MP said that she hoped this bill would ‘drive up the standards of global shark conservation’.
Bite-Back will now turn its attention to educating and inspiring members of the House of Lords to vote in favour of a ban.
Follow the bill’s progress at www.bite-back.com and learn how you can get involved in supporting shark conservation initiatives in the UK.
