Often mistaken to be a plant, Gorgonians, or sea fans, are in fact, stinging celled animals. These animals, or polyps form colonies that erect magnificent structures that resemble a beautiful fan stretching several metres high. Other fauna, such as hydrozoa, bryozoa, and brittle stars, are known to dwell within the branches of gorgonian colonies. This photo was taken at Tubbataha Reef, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Philippines’ hidden ecological treasure. This Gorgonian garden was found in shallow waters and the piercing morning sun presenting an excellent photo opportunity.
