Scubaverse UWP Winners Gallery: Yann Toso

Each month we give the winner of the Scubaverse Underwater Photography competition the opportunity to show off a little more of their work in a gallery. The February winner was Yann Toso and you can see his winning image at the top of this page.

What do you love about diving & underwater photography?

I was born and raised in a little town near Udine, in the extreme North-East of Italy. Now I currently live in Ancona (Italy) because of the University, as a student in the Master of Science course in Marine Biology.

I love scuba diving and even more underwater photography because I can show to family, friends and people what I can see deep in the Oceans and then spread the awareness on this wonderful underwater world. In particular I’m focused on low-impact diving and photography, Always stressing about keeping a neutral buoyancy and having a correct behaviour during interactions with marine life: No touch, no chase, no stress, leave nothing but bubbles!

What equipment do you use?

My photography equipment is made of a Sony Alpha-68 camera body in a Gio-Sim housing and my favourite lenses are vintage ones: Minolta 100mm f/2.8 Macro and Minolta 16mm f/2.8 fisheye. For super macro pictures I also add a SubSee Magnifier +10 wet lens. Lighting is composed by Inon z-240 strobes with a ‘Snooty’ snoot for particular advanced techniques.

Where can our readers see more of your work?

The Women Divers Hall of Fame scholarships and training grants are awarded yearly in the spring. The program began in 2002 with three scholarships. This year WDHOF had a record number of applications and awarded nearly $70,000 to 47 individuals who are passionate about our water planet and looking to grow in their knowledge and skills.
