Marine Conservation Society boosted by support of players of People’s Postcode Lottery

Published

Marine Conservation SocietyThe Marine Conservation Society (MCS) attended the 2017 People’s Postcode Lottery annual Charity Gala this week, where it was announced that £66.3 million was awarded to charities and good causes in 2016 – all thanks to players of People’s Postcode Lottery.

The Marine Conservation Society is one of 69 charities that benefitted from this incredible funding, with £450,000 received in 2016 alone.

The news of the funding total was shared at the annual event, on Tuesday 24 January, at Prestonfield House in Edinburgh. The Charity Gala celebrated the phenomenal achievements of charities working across Great Britain and internationally that are supported by players of People’s Postcode Lottery.

The event was attended by His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, Sir David Attenborough, broadcaster Dermot Murnaghan and TV presenter Fiona Phillips. Entertainment on the night was provided by Mica Paris and Soul Nation.

The fantastic funding is spent by MCS on tackling beach litter, getting thousands of people out on beaches removing and recording the pollution they find, and to get the public buying only the most sustainable seafood.

Sandy Luk, Chief Executive Officer, says “Funds provided by players of People’s Postcode Lottery enable MCS, and charities like us, to be a force for positive change. This is our third year of support, and we’re seeing real results with, for example, fewer plastic bags littering our beaches, and real changes in the way people buy their fish”.

Clara Govier, Head of Charities at People’s Postcode Lottery, said: “Our Gala is such a special time in People’s Postcode Lottery’s calendar where we come together and celebrate the incredible amount of money raised by our players and the fantastic work carried out by the charities as a result of the support. We continue to be overwhelmed by the incredible support of our players and thank them for their funding.”

Corporate Patrons provide a valuable boost to the work of The Shark Trust. The Trust team works globally to safeguard the future of sharks, and their close cousins, the skates and rays, engaging with a global network of scientists, policymakers, conservation professionals, businesses and supporters to further shark conservation.

Specialist tour operator Diverse Travel has operated since 2014 and is committed to offering its guests high quality, sustainable scuba diving holidays worldwide. Working together with the Shark Trust will enable both organisations to widen engagement and encourage divers and snorkellers to actively get involved in shark conservation.

Sharks are truly at the heart of every diver and at Diverse Travel, we absolutely share that passion. There is nothing like seeing a shark in the wild – it’s a moment that stays with you forever!” says Holly Bredin, Sales & Marketing Manager, Diverse Travel.

We’re delighted to celebrate our 10th year of business by becoming a Corporate Patron of the Shark Trust. This is an exciting partnership for Diverse and our guests. We will be donating on behalf of every person who books a holiday with us to contribute towards their vital shark conservation initiatives around the world. We will also be working together with the Trust to inspire divers, snorkellers and other travellers to take an active role – at home and abroad – in citizen science projects and other activities.”

Paul Cox, CEO of The Shark Trust, said:

It’s an exciting partnership and we’re thrilled to be working with Diverse Travel to enable more divers and travellers to get involved with sharks and shark conservation. Sharks face considerable conservation challenges but, through collaboration and collective action, we can secure a brighter future for sharks and their ocean home. This new partnership takes us one more valuable step towards that goal.”
