Egypt’s Brother Islands closed to divers this December

Egypt’s Chamber of Diving and Watersports has announced that the waters surrounding the Brother Islands are to be closed to divers and safari boats from 7th – 31st December 2018.

The closure is by decree from the Red Sea Governor and follows unusual shark behaviour recorded in the area, resulting in a number of reported attacks on divers. Many believe that the behavioural changes can be attributed to unauthorised chumming and feeding of sharks in order to attract them. A committee has been formed which will study shark behavior in the area surrounding the Brother Islands in order to better understand the reasons for these behavioural and environmental changes.

Penalties will be issued to those who disregard the ban on diving and safari boats in this area, which is considered one of the finest dive spots in the Red Sea.
