Pro Dive Mexico

Pro Dive Mexico, a PADI 5-Star Gold Palm Resort founded in 2003 and one of the most established and recognized IDC Centers in Latin America, located at several 4-5* Resorts along the Riviera Maya and in Cozumel, have been celebrating their “Specialty of the Month” for July – Peak performance Buoyancy.

Neutral buoyancy is the most important skill you can master as a diver so you neither sink nor float, glide effortlessly, use less air and ascend, descend or hover, almost as if by thought to interact gently with the aquatic life and affect your surroundings minimally.

The PADI Peak Performance Buoyancy course refines the basic skills you already learned as a PADI Open Water Diver and elevates you to the next level. It also highly benefits your preparations for a PADI Cavern or Wreck Specialty up to professional levels of a Dive Master or Instructor.

Peak Performance Buoyancy

Jo Armitage, one of Pro Dive Mexico’s two Course Directors and who was recently honoured with the PADI Platinum Award, says: “It is surprising how many divers we see diving with too much weight because it’s how much weight they were told they needed on their last vacation. The Peak Performance Buoyancy course will help you determine how much weight you need for different diving conditions, and you will also experiment with different weight positioning to perfect your “trim” – the ideal balanced body positioning in the water.  For many people, diving means kicking, but a more efficient way to move through the water is to kick and glide, thus reducing effort and air consumption. This course is also a “must do” for anyone thinking about using a camera underwater.”

The instruction and tips you will get over the two specialty dives will allow you to continue to improve your buoyancy skills on every dive afterwards.  Even those divers with hundreds of dives can see the benefit from taking the time to really focus on their buoyancy skills during this course and see where adjustment is required.

Once you have mastered your buoyancy control, what better way to put those skills into practice than to take the PADI Cavern Diver course? The cavern zone is an overhead environment in the light zone of a cave – the area near the cave entrance where natural light is always visible, and you will always be spoilt for choice in the Riviera Maya for beautiful cavern sites with crystal clear water.

In this challenging and exciting course you will learn about the procedures, techniques and equipment used in Cavern diving, as well as emergency procedures. With cavern sites, the amazing visibility can quickly turn to soup with one wrong fin kick to stir up the silt, so buoyancy control and proper finning techniques are vital.

For those who are interested in going down the professional route, the PADI Divemaster course can be a real eye-opener. Pro Dive Mexico are the leading PADI Career Development Centre in this area, and their Divemaster programs are designed to give their candidates the best preparation for real life as PADI professionals.

Pro Dive Mexico is one of the fastest-growing companies in Mexico, able to provide world-class dive and snorkel excursions, the full array of PADI courses, Stay & Dive packages, unlimited free Nitrox, as well as their own transportation system, a multi-lingual reservations team and equipment maintenance department.

To celebrate the fact that Peak Performance Buoyancy is July’s Specialty of the Month, Pro Dive Mexico are offering a discount of 10% on this course for couples (including friends and partners) who book their IDC or Divemaster course before 30th September 2014.

TRAVEL BLOG: Jeff Goodman Dives SOMABAY, Part 3

Today we are diving one of the outer reefs from an inflatable. As we reach the bottom, a reef octopus eases its way into the cover of a small crack in the coral while displaying it’s incredible ability to change colour. They are arguably one of the most charismatic of reef dwellers and it is always exciting for me to simply hover and watch. I would have spent longer and waited for it to come and investigate me, but as dive time is limited we wanted to move on and find a turtle.

somabay

The waters around Somabay are well protected and hold a rich variety of marine life. The reef edges are thriving colonies of coral and shoaling fish, while nearer the sea bed plenty of wildlife is still to be found.

Then we located the turtles. They are very used to divers and so show little concern when slowly approached. In fact occasionally one will come over to see what you are doing. There is always huge excitement when diving with a turtle. The shear thrill of sharing a moment with another species.

What a fantastic way to finish a wonderful few days diving and I would like to thank SOMABAY, ORCA DIVING and THE BREAKERS for making my stay such a good one.

I had a great time, with diving everyday either on the house reef or on one of the offshore reefs by inflatable or larger day boat. Orca diving provided high quality equipment and facilities while the staff were all very friendly and welcoming. The Breakers was right on the coast with nice rooms, good food and once again friendly staff making the whole trip a real pleasure.

Soma Bay covers an entire peninsula and is home to several resorts as well as residential  compounds.

As well as scuba diving, Somabay caters for many other sports and activities, and so is perfect for families as well as individuals and/or groups. And of course there is always time to lay peacefully on the beach under the Egyptian sun.

TRAVEL BLOG: Jeff Goodman Dives SOMABAY, Part 2

Day three of my trip to Somabay and we were spending the day on the Lady Christina and diving on the wreck of the Salem Express.

somabay

Diving wrecks for me is always one of mixed emotions. The excitement of diving a wreck is more than often tempered by the thought of loss of life when she sank. The Salem Express was a passenger ship and a roll-on/roll-off ferry travelling from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia to Safaga, Egypt. Most passengers were of poor class travelling home from their holidays while around 150 people were returning home from their pilgrimage to Mecca.

somabay

The ship struck a reef and sank within 20 minutes. Passengers were trapped below deck and the ship was filled with fear and panic.

somabay

The wreck area is strewn with personal belongings from the crew and passengers such as a transistor radio and a flat iron for clothes. A diver at sometime has put them in a prominent place to be seen.

somabay

Tragically only one life boat was launched while the others went down with the ship. More than 600 men, women and children lost their lives here.

somabay

It’s a stark reminder that the sea can be unforgiving and so when we dive on such wrecks we should do so with humble regard.

Returning to the surface, shoals of fish are gathered under our boat and seem to be welcoming us back into the light.

Back at the Breakers I sat in the dining area with a beer and a very good meal while my thoughts still remained with the day’s dive on the Salem Express.

Check in for part 3 tomorrow for Jeff’s last day of diving with Somabay on the off-shore reefs looking for turtles.
