Calling all divers – competition prize will help conserve reefs

Reef diving project in Oman or the Maldives will be hands on not luxury!

The UK’s leading marine charity, the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) and Biosphere Expeditions, in partnership with Reef Check, is offering a free place on an expedition to dive and observe some of the most fabulous reefs in the world.

The winner of this unique opportunity will choose from either a trip to Musandam (Oman) or the Maldives and must be qualified to a minimum PADI Open Water or equivalent.

Applicants can enter from dry land via a 100-word short essay or a one-minute video outlining why they should be the winner.
The winner will have to be prepared to muck in on a hands-on conservation project, not a luxury dive holiday.

Dr. Matthias Hammer, Executive Director of Biosphere Expeditions, says:  “This competition is in response to the very good response of several hundred entrants we had to the same competition last year. We are proud to have our partners MCS and Reef Check on board again too and encourage all those who want to use their diving skills for reef conservation to apply“.

Nicola Greaves, Head of Marketing at MCS, says “Our partnership with Biosphere and Reef Check is now in its seventh year and, with them, we have helped significantly enhance reef conservation and understanding among local communities in Musandam and the Maldives. This competition is an excellent opportunity for one lucky person to get real hands-on experience of reef conservation in some of the world’s most beautiful yet fragile ecosystems

Dania Trespalacios, Tropical Programme Director at the Reef Check Foundation, adds that “by training citizen scientists as Reef Check EcoDivers, Biosphere Expeditions inspires divers to become ocean stewards. And by completing Reef Check surveys, Biosphere Expeditions provides important data on the status of coral reefs, which may be used to better manage and conserve these special ecosystems.”

Kelsea K., last year’s winner, says “I’ve learnt so much and could not be happier with the expedition. You come for the holiday and you stay for the science. It was amazing.

Corporate Patrons provide a valuable boost to the work of The Shark Trust. The Trust team works globally to safeguard the future of sharks, and their close cousins, the skates and rays, engaging with a global network of scientists, policymakers, conservation professionals, businesses and supporters to further shark conservation.

Specialist tour operator Diverse Travel has operated since 2014 and is committed to offering its guests high quality, sustainable scuba diving holidays worldwide. Working together with the Shark Trust will enable both organisations to widen engagement and encourage divers and snorkellers to actively get involved in shark conservation.

Sharks are truly at the heart of every diver and at Diverse Travel, we absolutely share that passion. There is nothing like seeing a shark in the wild – it’s a moment that stays with you forever!” says Holly Bredin, Sales & Marketing Manager, Diverse Travel.

We’re delighted to celebrate our 10th year of business by becoming a Corporate Patron of the Shark Trust. This is an exciting partnership for Diverse and our guests. We will be donating on behalf of every person who books a holiday with us to contribute towards their vital shark conservation initiatives around the world. We will also be working together with the Trust to inspire divers, snorkellers and other travellers to take an active role – at home and abroad – in citizen science projects and other activities.”

Paul Cox, CEO of The Shark Trust, said:

It’s an exciting partnership and we’re thrilled to be working with Diverse Travel to enable more divers and travellers to get involved with sharks and shark conservation. Sharks face considerable conservation challenges but, through collaboration and collective action, we can secure a brighter future for sharks and their ocean home. This new partnership takes us one more valuable step towards that goal.”
