Ask Justin Trudeau to End Canada’s Commercial Seal Slaughter

Tens of thousands of baby seals are killed in the annual commercial seal slaughter. As Canada celebrates its 150th birthday, it’s old enough that it should know better.

The commercial seal slaughter is already a mere shadow of what it used to be, because many countries have moved to ban imports of seal-derived products. Switzerland just became the 35th nation to do so, joining European Union member states, Russia, and the US. But despite the decline in demand, the Canadian government continues to subsidise this cruel industry.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has tackled many social issues since taking office, and now he has an opportunity to help others who desperately need it: baby seals.

Please sign this petition urging Prime Minister Trudeau to lift the cloud darkening Canada’s birthday celebrations by ending government subsidies of the commercial seal slaughter.

The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) Foundation is a UK-based charity dedicated to establishing and protecting the rights of all animals. Like humans, animals are capable of suffering and have interests in leading their own lives; therefore, they are not ours to use – for food, clothing, experimentation, entertainment or any other reason. PETA and our affiliates around the world educate policymakers and the public about cruelty to animals and promote an understanding of the right of all animals to be treated with respect. PETA works through public education, research, legislation, special events, celebrity involvement and protest campaigns. PETA believes in non-violence and does not advocate or support actions in which anyone, human or non-human, is harmed. PETA is a charitable organisation that works to educate the public about the horrors of cruelty to animals through peaceful means. For more information visit
